Journaling has become a very popular activity for many people in many settings. Much of the reason for its popularity is that it gives helpful opportunities for exploring our thoughts and feelings about important issues that affect us. It serves as a useful sounding board for dealing with issues that can be confusing and disorientating. Beginning a career in social work is, of course, a major undertaking and a significant life-changing step that should not be made unthinkingly or without adequate preparation. It is for this reason that this journal has been developed.
Written by a highly experienced social work author and educator, it offers an excellent basis for working through some important questions and trying to clarify the thoughts and feelings involved. It will not give you instructions or make decisions for you, but what it will do is give you a great deal of food for thought and provide space, literally (on the page) and metaphorically (in your mind). Social work is a challenging occupation, but it is also potentially a very rewarding one, and so taking the time and trouble to pay attention to key questions should stand you in good stead for being well equipped to rise to the challenges involved and to reap the rewards. It will provide an invaluable resource to guide you through the early stages of your career.
